Rotterdam is not the first city that comes to mind when considering contemporary art. We have been in so many other European citiesinhabiting other local art scenesthat we almost forgot about our own city. We were curious to know how many spaces, platforms or aesthetic zones for contemporary art are currently active. Be it a physical space with white walls or black holes, virtual on the web, or both, an artist’s project open to the public, a short term or temporary event or presentation, public readings and film screenings, a magazine, a small publishing house, profit or non-profit, artist and/or curator-run, a ‘normal’ gallery, or an art institute. What they all have in common is that they actively take part in the art scene presenting, supporting and promoting CONTEMPORARY ART. I have come to the stunning conclusion that Rotterdam has (at least) 79 spaces/platforms/aesthetic zones for contemporary art. If you compare this to the art capital Berlin, which has roughly 1 art space per 2 square kilometres, our ratio is 1 to 3. So our city is not the cultural desert I imagined. For a small city (± 580,000 people vs Berlin 3,5 million) this is not bad. Or is it? It is remarkable that the artists’ initiatives are not white cubes per se, where art objects are exhibited on white walls. Most show an interest in establishing meeting zones for exchange and learning, discursive and performative spaces, the experimental black box, magazines for critical thought and (visual) research, web-based platforms, communal interactions, collaborative office spaces and the street. The institutes and galleries, however, stick to the traditional white cube presentation. Rotterdam Art Map #1 offers a snapshot of art zones and gives information on Rotterdam’s vibrant and dynamic art scene. Note: Help us to develope the Art Map#2.0 Rotterdam. New printed version will be out in February 2010 and presented at Art Rotterdam. So feel free to email us with suggestions and comments if you know other aesthetic zones or think spaces are missing. In the meantime we will keep a dynamic update here on our website. ^Rob Hamelijnck 56 Project spaces / magazines / blogs / publishers etc. 1 ADA Rotterdam / Has moved to Feijenoordhttp://adarotterdam.nl Area for debate and art.
